Salvation as a selective incentive
نویسنده
چکیده
As club goods, religions face the problem of free riding. Smaller religious clubs, such as cults or sects, can often surmount this problem through communal pressures or by requiring their members to provide easily monitored signals. Generally, however, such tactics will be unavailable or too costly for large denominations, and, as such, these denominations must look for other techniques to avoid free riding. This paper argues that the Roman Catholic doctrine of justification by faith and works serves as an Olsonian selective incentive and presents empirical evidence in support of this claim. Specifically, I show that Catholics contribute significantly more to their churches as they approach death than do members of Protestant denominations. More generally, this paper suggests that church doctrines influence behavioral incentives, and religious leaders may be able to capitalize on these behavioral effects for the benefit of their church. © 2006 Elsevier Inc. Calvins Reformation in Geneva: Self and Social Signalling
As Weber (1904) recognized, Calvinistic beliefs about predestination may constitute a powerful incentive for good works; an individual wishes to receive assurances about her future prospects of salvation, and good works may provide a positive signal about such prospects. These beliefs can in turn create a social pressure to behave well, as good works can also signal to others that individuals b...

A proton NMR method for the drtermination of salvation numbers of alkaline earth cations with hexamethyl phosphoramide (HMPA) in nitromethane (NM) as diluents is described. The method is based on monitoring the resonance frequency of HMPA protons as a function of HMPA / metal ion molar ratio at constant metalion concentration. The average salvation number of cations, , at any HMPA / metal ...
متن کاملA Comparative Study of Salvation from the Viewpoints of Motahari and Rahner
Among the topics that can play an important role in interreligious dialogue and the relationship between civilizations and cultures is the topic of human salvation. The aim of this speculative paper, rooted in a variety of concepts derived from social anthropology, theology, and the history of religion, is to develop the broad notion of spirituality in terms of what might be called cultural wisdom. This I do alongside a discussion of the human proclivity for meaning-making understood as a process expressed in numerous religious traditions as 'salvation'. T...
متن کاملDoes Romans 9 Teach Individual Election Unto Salvation? Some Exegetical and Theological Reflections
Calvinists typically appeal to Romans 9 to support their theology of divine election. In particular, they assert that Romans 9 teaches that God unconditionally elects individuals to be saved. By "unconditionally" they mean that God, in eternity past, freely chooses specific individuals whom he will save (Eph 1:4) and that his choice is not based on their foreseen faith or effort (Rom 9:16). God...
